Following the devastating fire at Notre Dame in Paris on Monday 15 April 2019, The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, Right Reverend Susan Brown, appealed for church bells to be rung on Thursday 19 April 2019 (Maundy Thursday) at 7pm for seven minutes in sympathy with Parisians.

This was a global initiative to show solidarity at Easter with the people of Paris; 7 pm was the approximate time the fire tore through the 850 year old building on the evening of Monday 15 April.  The Moderator said to the press that she thought the global outpouring of sympathy had been magnified "because the Church is more than 'just' a building".  In addition there is a feeling that Notre Dame belongs not just to Paris but to the World.

So if you were out and about in Carluke that Thursday evening and heard the church bells pealing and wondered why, now you know!
